PM in Swansea to Boost Welsh Tories

UK Prime Minister David Cameron was in Swansea on April 1 to boost the Welsh Conservatives’ campaign ahead of the Welsh Assembly election on May 5.

Mr. Cameron, addressing party members at the Guildhall, spoke of a difficult year financially, as well as recent British involvement in the Libyan conflict. Addressing funding cuts and the railway electrification from London to South Wales were high on the Welsh agenda.

Only a day after the Welsh Assembly was dissolved ahead of the May 5 election, the Prime Minister noted that public spending cuts are lower in Wales than England, and that corporation tax is to be cut. Fuel duty, he said, has been reduced by 1p.

A small group of protestors outside the Guildhall carried placards against cuts, in the week that it was announced that Welsh universities face average cuts of 5% this year. Swansea faces a 4.09% cut. Teaching budgets across Wales are also set to be reduced by around 8.5%.

At Swansea, the fight to stop cuts to the Modern Foreign Languages department continues, with a petition and demonstration having put pressure on the University Council earlier this week to hold off making redundancies.

Some of Wales’ smaller universities are set to merge as part of a wider plan to reduce the number of Welsh universities, amid concerns over the financial future of some establishments. Ironically, newly merged Trinity St. David faces the biggest cut (8.87%).

And from September 2012, universities will be allowed to charge between £4,000 and £9,000 in tuition fees.

In his speech, Mr. Cameron said, “We listen to what people want, we roll up our sleeves and we get the job done. That’s exactly what we have got to tell the Welsh people every day until those elections in May.”

On the subject of the railway electrification, he said, “In thirteen years, Labour did not electrify one single piece of track. We’ve got the money, we’re going ahead with it and it’s going to help the people of South Wales.”

He added, “We’re looking at extending that to Swansea.”

The Prime Minister also spoke out against the introduction of the AV (Alternative Vote) system, suggesting that a vote whereby a candidate who comes second or third can win an election is “obscure”.

Mr. Cameron added that the AV system is only used in three countries across the world – Australia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

The Conservatives have faced criticism over the timing of the referendum on the issue of AV, as it is set to be held on May 5, the same day as the Assembly election will be held in Wales.

The Welsh Assembly is now dissolved, the first time such a move has been taken prior to an election since its establishment in 1999. May 5 marks the Assembly’s fourth election in its 12 year history, and the first since it was granted full law-making powers in March.
