SAILING TEAM IN FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON
By Imogen Stanley - Swansea University Sailing
ON A COLD weekend in November Swansea’s 1st and 2nd sailing team made the long drive up to Birmingham. With 16 different University’s competing and 21 teams, including top teams such as Birmingham, Nottingham, Exeter, Warwick, Cardiff and Bristol, the weekend was sure to bring good competition.
After a long summer of no team racing, both Swansea teams were up for some competition. Swansea 2nds were first on the water facing Warwick Turtles. After an unsuccessful start from Swansea they fought back to beat Warwick with Sarah Davies pulling some kamikaze moves to get Swansea to the front. They continued to be on top form throughout the day as they beat rivals Cardiff on route to winning over half their races, so they managed to qualify top of the Silver fleet, a very good position for their first outing as a team.
Swansea 1sts also had a successful start to the day winning all the races, with tough competition from Birmingham Old Boys and Bristol they managed to stay top of their league, qualifying for the Gold Fleet. Some of the most impressive moves of the day were from David and Imogen who at mark 3 managed to get both of their team mates to the front of the fleet ahead of Bristol. Imogen & Olli sacrificed themselves after an impressive start to make sure that Dyfrig & Emily made it to the front of the fleet.
Sunday loomed with sore heads and blurry eyes but we all managed to power on. The silver fleet that Swansea 2nds were in was a very tough league and they put up a good fight winning half their races and finished 5th in the silver fleet which is an excellent start to the brand new team. Congratulations go to Sarah Davis & George Frankpitt, Max Robinson & Rhiannon Blow and Patrick Ratcliffe & Georgina Nelson.
Swansea 1sts continued on top form winning all the morning races thus proving that you do sail best after a few ‘casual drinks’ the night before. As finals loomed the 1sts became nervous and had a final slip up against a team they had beaten the day before. They put up a good fight but couldn’t quite hold the Birmingham Old Boys off and lost their first race of the weekend. With only Nottingham between Swansea 1sts and the finals, they devastated Nottingham winning 2-0. Swansea were through to their first ever final of a tournament.
Every team member was nervous as we faced Warwick who was placed 3rd at BUCS last year. After a nerve wracking start we won the first race and Warwick took the second. As a best of three final, one race stood between Swansea and their first win, and with the pressure on, Swansea managed to rake in the nerves and perform to the ability they had been at all weekend, finishing the weekend off with a top result and winning the last race and the overall tournament. Congratulations to the first team captain Imogen Kaack and her team of David Ashworth, Dyfrig Mon & Emily Craig and Imogen Stanley & Ollie Mcsoley. Thank you to our sponsor Vodka Revolutions and The Athletic Union.
