SWANSEA UNIVERSITY Women’s first team continued their unbeaten run last Wednesday with an emphatic 5-0 win over Cardiff 2nds on a soggy afternoon at Fairwood.
From the offset, Swansea looked alien from their usual selves with many inaccurate passes but it wasn’t long until Swansea opened the scoring with a great run down the wing from Emily Marchant chasing a long ball over the top, who slotted home the first of her two goals confidently. Swansea continued to impose themselves and testing the Cardiff goalkeeper.
With a continuous physical struggle against increasing winds and rain, Swansea trekked on to double the score with an impressive 35-yard strike from midfielder Charlotte Maling. With Swansea’s offensive continuing to stretch Cardiff’s defence and multiple chances for Michelle Owen and Amy Sheppard, a third goal was added before the break with Marchant’s second strike of the game.
With the continuing heavy rain and wind as well as the boggy pitch, the referee abandoned the game midway through the second half. This was not until after Swansea notched two more goals. The first of which arose from a handball within the Cardiff box, leading to Maling slotting home her second of the game with a confident spot kick. The final goal derived from a set of majestic passes amongst Swansea to allow Ria Llewellyn to charge down the left wing and add her name to the score sheet. Due to illness, Rachel Clayton replaced Raegan Healy late on and Healy’s fresh energy pushed Swansea forward again, but was unfortunate to add another goal.
Swansea felt they could have added a couple more goals to the score had the game continued to the end, nevertheless they felt confident with their conclusive score. With Cardiff’s 1st team struggling in the league above, they show great confidence in their ambition to not only win Varsity but win the league as well, a view echoed by Lloyd.
