Theatre: Beauty and the Beast at Swansea Grand
This April, New World Productions is making sure Panto season is not just for Christmas festivities. Their Panto style production of Beauty and the Beast, which is widely considered one of Disney’s greatest animated films, is blessing Swansea Grand with two fun-filled performances. Originating from the French fairy tale La Belle et la Bête, Beauty and the Beast has turned into the one of the top three animated features released during a period known as, the “Disney Renaissance”, which began in 1989 with The Little Mermaid and ended in 1999 with Tarzan.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Beauty and the Beast opens with a prologue, whereby an enchantress, disguised as an old beggar woman offers the young prince a rose in exchange for a night’s shelter. The young prince is so disgusted at the old woman’s appearance that he turns her away, she punishes his selfishness by transforming him into an ugly beast and turning his servants into household furniture. The beast is left in isolation with only a magic mirror and a rose. The rose will bloom until his twenty-first birthday. To break the spell he must, “learn to love and be loved in return,” before the rose wilts, or he will remain a beast forever. All hopes seem to be lost until years later in a nearby village there is a young girl named Belle. As her name suggests she is exceptionally beautiful, however her life is not complete, she escapes by reading, spending her time visiting the library whilst waiting for her prince charming. This is perhaps my favourite moment of the story, where the first song of the musical is performed. Belle’s books help her escape not only her mundane life but Gaston’s courting ways; Gaston, the local idol wants to claim Belle as his wife.
Belle’s father, Maurice, has invented a wood-chopping machine, which takes him through the dark and sinister woods to display his machine at a fair. Maurice loses his way and stumbles upon the Beast’s castle, where he meets characters such as Cogsworth, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts and her son Chip. Through twists and turns Belle is exchanged for her father, taking his place as the Beast’s prisoner. The story continues with laughter, tears and anger culminating with a fight between the house furniture and the local village, backed by Gaston who has become murderously jealous over Belle’s connection with the Beast.
While the servants drive the mob out of the castle, Gaston finds the Beast and attacks him. The Beast, who is initially too depressed to fight back, soon regains his strength when he sees Belle arriving at the castle. After winning a heated battle, the Beast spares Gaston’s life and climbs up to a balcony where Belle is waiting. But will Gaston admit defeat and leave the two alone? Has the Beast learnt to love and to be loved in return in time?
The show will be starring Melissa Suffield aka. Lucy Beale from Eastenders, John Freeman aka. Frank London from M.I. High, and Danielle McCormack aka. Mel Barker from My Parents are Aliens. There will also be an amazing supporting cast and live band.
This beautiful fairy tale will be performed at the Grand Theatre on the 23rd April at 2pm and 6pm. Swansea’s Grand Theatre first opened in 1897, it has since undergone refurbishments so that it now holds one thousand auditorium seats. The Arts Wing is the most recent development at the theatre, a space to host exhibitions, conferences and smaller-scale music and drama performances.
This production promises to be packed with brilliant dance routines, plenty of laughter and fun for all the family. A treat for all ages, this provides a chance for students to relive their childhood favourite!
