VARSITY 2011: THE BUILD-UP
IT IS finally that time of year again. The highlight of the Welsh university sporting calendar where Swansea University travel down the M4 to face their rivals Cardiff.
The occasion is not just about the pride of the players on the pitch but the pride of the university; giving the students the chance to feel a part of a community; to rally their voices in support of their team and to swarm Cardiff city centre in an array of green and white. Coming off the back of a stunning victory last year at the Liberty Stadium, Swansea University can run down the tunnel at the Millennium Stadium with their heads held high.
The men’s first team have done extremely well in the BUCS Premiership, narrowly missing out on the top spot behind the University of Bristol. They won eight games out of twelve beating every team in the league at least once, doing the double over UWE and UWE Hartpury. There were some stunning victories over UWE, winning 84-14, and the University of Bristol, winning 57-24. A couple of unlucky defeats, losing to UWIC and the University of Exeter by a handful of points, may have cost them the league title but overall it has been a successful league campaign and a credible season. There have been a lot of positives to take into the game against Cardiff.
Cardiff finished top of the Premier Men’s South B Division but faced less challenging opposition than Swansea. There have been some impressive results for them, such as beating Imperial Medicals 107-0, UWIC 2nd’s 62-8, Cardiff Medics 66-0 and UWE Hartpury 2nd’s 58-3. They have also made it to the Men’s Trophy final where they will be playing Nottingham Trent University in April. The Varsity match will not be a clear cut game by any stretch of the imagination with both teams bringing skill, aggression, determination and most importantly passion, to the pitch.
This year will be the fifteenth anniversary of the Welsh Varsity and over the years there has developed an intense but friendly rivalry between the two teams. Many memorable games have been played at St. Helens, Cardiff Arms Park and Bridgend’s Brewery Field. Swansea University have won nine out of fourteen games making them the dominant side. This is perhaps down to Swansea’s ability to field talented players; in 2007 there were eleven FIRA Internationals in the squad. However, in the last five years Cardiff University have won three out of five games making the Welsh Varsity a more even contest. It is surely a big boost for players on both sides to be playing at the home of Welsh rugby; this could provide us with the least predictable game in the history of the Welsh Varsity.
Head Coach Richard Lancaster believed that the season had got off to a slow start, losing a few games by a couple of points. He said that the team were ‘bitterly disappointed’ with losing out on the league title but conceded that they had been playing a higher standard of opposition this year. His expectations for the Varsity match are good, believing the team are well prepared. Members of the Ospreys and Scarlets coaching team have taken training sessions with the players and they have been working with Sports Vision Wales to "improve awareness and speed of information processing in their peripheral vision". Lancaster said the team would have a light training session in the week leading up to the match but would generally prepare for the game as they would any other. He said that Cardiff University deserved respect due to their strong results and that it will be interesting to see the atmosphere at the stadium as the players will not be used to an occasion of this scale.
Swansea head to Cardiff with victory in mind and it is guaranteed to be a thrilling game in one of the greatest stadiums in world sport. Hopefully the crowd at the Millennium Stadium will be cheering "West is Best" and we’ll be bringing the Welsh Varsity championship back to Swansea.
