Varsity is coming

29th January 2007

It's that time of year again, Varsity is rearing it's ugly head and preparations have begun for the traditional hard fought games that we have all become accustomed too in recent years. Last year Swansea failed to live up to their usual successful standards in nearly all of the sports being contested. This year all the University teams will be looking to give their best against Cardiff to overturn past efforts to play in, for some sports men and women, the biggest game of their sportng careers to date.

Swansea have only ever lost the Varsity rugby match twice in the history of the competition. However there are a whole day of events that take place and the triumphant university is the one who wins the most events throughout the day. This is where Swansea have failed in the past, as although they have succeeded in the rugby it is the other events that have prevented them from taking home the Varsity Shield.

With this year's events being held at Cardiff on April 25 they will need the help of their travelling support to cheer them to victory to rectify this situation. The tickets for this year's game will be available from the week commencing the 12 February. It costs £10 for the ticket for the rugby match, which this year is being held at Cardiff Arms Park, where Wales played international rugby matches for many years. There is also a bundle available for £20, which includes the bus ride to Cardiff, the match ticket,a Varsity t-shit and an entrance ticket for the post-match festivities in Time. This promises to be an unmissable night, with all the competitors and spectators getting involved for the biggest and most memorable AU night of the year.

As well as t-shirts large foam pointy hands will be on sale and face painting will be encouraged. However the streaking of last year will not be, as there is a possibility the match will be televised and security at Cardiff Arms Park is almost certain to be stricter than that of Bridgend last year. Offenders may end up spending a night in a cell - you have been warned! The Tomos Watkins varsity boat race will take place at an earlier date of the 21st March in Cardiff and is held in a similar spirit to the main event.
