Book Review: Notes on a Scandal

A Golden Globe nominated film version of this brilliant book is about to be released starring Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett. Such a delicate, controversial subject matter is superbly dealt with by this Booker prize short listed author. When art teacher, Sheba Hart, begins an affair with her underage pupil, her fellow teacher, Barbara, steps into defend her.
However, her motives for doing so become increasingly dark and sinister. Barbara, as the narrator, is a lonely, malicious character, whilst Sheba herself comes across as rather whiny, naïve and selfish.
The unnerving relationship that develops between the two colleagues is left undefined and open to interpretation.
However, the story of Barbara's manipulation of Sheba, and Sheba's affair with the rebellious Connolly is cleverly written, surprisingly funny, and intensely gripping.
