St David's Day Events Preview

26th February 2007

St David's Day was declared a National day of celebration in Wales in the 18th Century, in honour of Saint David, or Dewi Sant, who died in the year 589.

Last year, a poll conducted in Wales found that 87% of people would like St David's day to be marked by a bank holiday, with over half willing to sacrifice a different bank holiday for it. Many people will adorn their lapels with either a daffodil or a leek on the day, both of which are national Welsh emblems, or they will wear traditional Welsh costume.

The Grand Theatre (01792 475715) is holding a St David's Day concert. They also have new Swansea band, The Storys, who list Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles as influences, playing a special live gig.

The Dragon Hotel (01792 657182) is going all out to provide diners in its piano bar with a special Welsh themed night, including a Welsh themed menu, music, song and dance. Tickets are £35 and you can be sure of a tasty, fun and patriotic night.

The Brangwyn Hall (01792 475715) is playing host to the Chamber Orchestra of Wales and Male Chorus, playing Welsh favourites by candlelight. Special guests include Karl Jenkins and you receive a free welshcake upon arrival. Tickets are £9.

Head over to Mumbles for their annual St David's day festival. You will find concerts, exhibitions, a craft fair, galleries and the Mumbles local produce market. There will be a St David's Day in Mumbles exhibition from 4-5th March at the Ty Hanes Local History Centre.
