Vote 07: Student's Union Sabbatical Elections

Interview: Miles Goodman - Current Welfare Officer

We were lucky enough to catch up with the current Welfare Office Miles Goodman, who came up to the Waterfront Office to share his thoughts about the position of Welfare officer and his hopes for his predecessor.

There may well be many people out there who are unaware of what the Welfare officer actually does, apart from the obvious that is! The main duties that this position encompasses includes; running campaigns whether it be sexual health all the way looking at disabilities and of course health and well being. For Miles one of his most important roles was being able to lend a "kind ear" to anyone who wanted it, and of course pointing any students to the right direction. He also added that, "I work closely with the advice centre, which is key to the Welfare of many of the students." As well as his regular sabbatical duties he is involved with the Nightline which runs three nights a week.

Miles has had a pretty successful year, he's introduced the Healthy Living campaign which covers, mental, sexual and physical health. A further big campaign of his has been pushing for sexual safety, in particular the infamous Love Chicken and the giving out of free condoms.

As for this years line-up Miles is pleasantly surprised, "there's a really strong selection of candidates this year, I know them all really well." He certainly isn't worried about passing on his position to any of the applicants, "they're all a really nice bunch of people and they've created a fantastic friendly competition."

As for his expectations of the new officer he would like it if they could continue with the healthy living campaign and develop it further as it is something very close it his heart. He would also like them to increase participation in the campaigns and raise awareness of services like the Nightline. Obviously he would also like them to bring their own ideas to the table and help to put students' welfare first.

So what's next for Miles? "I've applied to various graduate jobs in London in Business Management, so we'll see what happens. He said, "I love a challenge."

We'll be back later to give you an up-date on where the Welfare results are at!
