Interview: Nick Morgan - Welfare Officer Elect
- 16 Mar 2007 04:30
The competition for Welfare Officer was always going to be tough; with a selection of strong candidates it is no surprise that there was a recount which managed to produce a marginal win by Nick Morgan with 784 votes to runner up Sheryl Earnshaw who received 625 votes after five rounds.
Having wrestled Nick away from his campaign team we managed to grab a quick word with him just before 4am this morning. At that time in the morning he was a man of few words, who clearly is very attached to his manifesto. "It's not quite sunk in yet" was his reaction to his win, "I thought that Liz had a better chance than me."
When asked about his plans for next year he simply wants to continue with the campaigns that are already in place and of course stick to his "manifesto." So what is in this manifesto, he wants to continue to promote sexual safety, highlight the dangers of binge drinking, develop Nightline further. He also plans to bring more recycling onto the campus, introduce a greater range of healthy food, improve security and finally promote the advice centre.
It's his environmentally friendly policy that has helped him to win supporters as well as continuing with Miles' highly successful campaigns, for him his first aim is to "get on with the other Sabbs!" As obviously it is important that they have a strong team to run the SU.
On the whole the run for Welfare Officer is one which has been very well mannered, all of the candidates have noted how friendly the atmosphere has been and how well prepared the competition was.
So congratulations to our new Welfare Officer and we wish him all the best for the next year and his up-coming campaigns.
