ADIOS AMIGOS! UNI STUDENTS MOURN LIKELY LANGUAGE LOSS

Students frommultiple departments this Monday marched from Singleton Abbey to the front of Fulton House in a mock funeral to protest cuts to the Modern Languages Faculty which have been described by organisers as “sweeping”.
One organiser, Ben Sluckin, described the protest as an attempt to get the university to reconsider the cuts. “Modern Foreign Languages are an important long term investment and the cuts are extremely short sighted.” He was also quick to point out that student’s from other faculties, and several societies such as the History Society, have joined the protests in support of their plight.
Ben told the Waterfront that he, as a first year language student, was notified of the cuts in August; after accepting his offer at Swansea. He expressed concern about the lack of staff and teaching resources now available.
Particular concern was raised about the complete removal of the “Russian, Portuguese and Catalan departments, and the removal of all Italian lecturers”, despite Italian still being offered in a combined honours degree course for next year.
Ben, and other organisers of the campaign, raised the issue at the Student General Meeting on the 15th November where the motion obtained the general support from the Student Union.
Luke Young, Student Union President, said in a statement; “The Students’ Union fully supports the peaceful protests against the cuts to Modern Foreign Languages. The union believes that the proposals to halve staff in the department will damage the quality of the experience that students enrolling on language courses will receive.
At the Student General Meeting, it was voted that the union should support the campaign being led by the presidents of our language societies. We are proud of the work that they are doing in the interests of Swansea University and its students.”
The language cuts committee have also written to several MP’s and Welsh Assembly members asking for support against the cuts.
Val Lloyd, Assembly Member for Swansea East told the Waterfront, “I was disappointed to learn that Swansea University plans to cut over 50% of its lecturing staff in the Modern Languages department this coming year.
Although I can acknowledge the financial pressure facing the university, I believe that these proposals could seriously endanger language provisions at Swansea University, as it would reduce the range and quality of language degrees and force potential students to look elsewhere to study. Additionally, these proposals would effectively threaten Swansea’s status as a regional capital for languages in South West Wales.”
Lloyd went on to say; “I have written to both the Vice Chancellor and the Head of Administration at Swansea University, expressing my concerns with these proposals. I have also asked the Vice Chancellor to re-consider these proposals and to build on, rather than damage, what is a highly-regarded Modern Languages department at Swansea University.”
The students have also written an open letter to the Vice Chancellor of Swansea University in which they make clear their opposition to the cuts, pointing out that languages have been ‘specified as a strategic priority area by the government, Welsh Assembly and the Browne report’, and request a meeting with the Vice Chancellor and the opportunity to put their case before the University Council by the 6th of December.
As of December 2nd, Mr Sluckin told The Waterfront his group was yet to receive a response from the Vice Chancellor’s office.
In response to a request for comment, a Swansea University spokesperson told us, “In the light of financial and other challenges facing Modern Languages, the department’s academic staff and trade union representatives are participating in a genuine and ongoing consultation; with the aim of agreeing a revised strategy and structure that addresses the current and future needs of this area of the higher education sector.”
Other groups within the university have expressed solidarity with the campaign. Chris Bovis, speaking on behalf of the History Society, requested that members of the society joined the protest on Monday to show support.
“As a sign of Solidarity towards the University & Arts and Humanities the History Society will stand side-by-side with Modern Languages at this Funeral, with the History Society offering a banner to visually show our unwavering support.”

Ironically the University had originally planned to hold a Celebration of Study Abroad Event in Fulton House on the same day as the protests, which Vice Chancellor, Richard Davies was due to attend. Labelled in an email sent out as a ‘showcase of the Universities Study Abroad Programmes’ it encouraged students who had participated in the scheme to attend.
The event was quickly postponed by the International Development Office last week when organisers realised it was set to clash with the student demonstration. No one from the University was available for comment on this issue, but the Waterfront understands from speaking to sources that the event has been booked in weeks in advance and the protest inadvertently set for the same day.
