Interview with Matt Robinson – Conservative Party
This year’s surprising Presidential candidate, third year Law and American Studies student Matthew Robinson, known in the sabbatical elections as ‘Matthew Robinson – Conservative Party’, recently caused a stir at this year’s hustings (Quiz the Candidates) with his remarks and opinions that somewhat conflict with the majority student view.
Robinson gave a few hours of the final day of campaigning to speak to The Waterfront on his decision to run with his party affiliation and explains his reasons for supporting the recent cuts to higher education and why he feels he will not be a successful candidate in this year’s sabbatical elections.
Robinson’s main concern regarding the elections overall is that the turn out for voting has been so low in recent years and that this year will be no different. Insisting that the Students Union have done a fantastic job in implementing electronic voting, Robinson feels that there has not been enough publicity for the system and worries what kind of mandate the successful candidates have with such a small turnout of majority union aware students. Robinson remarks on the equally low turnout for the SGMs in which few bother to participate other than the thirty or so involved activists in the University who determine Union policy. Furthermore, Robinson stating during hustings that he was preaching to the converted; with majority campaign teams in the audience, little effect is made on those outside the ‘Union Bubble’.
As for his affiliation with the Conservative party, Robinson noted a rooted dislike for anything Conservative which is viewed by a vast majority as an enemy to young liberal people. But Robinson says that the Conservative party are not ‘evil’ and every bit a part of the University as any other student. Robinson stresses that he is Conservative with a big C, not a small c, affirming that the political party is socially progressive and not the party they were in the 1980s. With an avid interest in American politics, Robinson argues that the current UK Conservative Party are closer to the American Democrat Party than the right leaning Republican party.
With regard to the education cuts proposed and passed by the current coalition government, Robinson said he feels that the reaction was somewhat hysterical; observing that even the NUS has stated that the effects had been "dramatized". Robinson says that there is only so much money to be had, adding that it was the previous Labour government that left us in such a shambolic economic state and insists that students will not be priced out of Education. Robinson stresses that he would hate to see the country go to the US education system further stating that he does not claim that everything the current coalition government does is right but that they are often unnecessarily demonised.
Robinson insists that he was not at all against students participating in the protest against education cuts but he did have issues with the Students Union subsidising students, spending an estimated £3,000 on transporting the students to the event. Moreover Robinson said that if the Students Union can afford to spend £3,000 on sending students to London "they sure as hell can afford to put more into the student paper and give it the autonomy and funding it deserves" adding that it would be wise to spend money at the University before spending it elsewhere.
As for running with his party affiliation alongside his name, Robinson says it was an attempt to get the attention of students, which he admits was a little dramatic but rightly says he wouldn’t be talking to The Waterfront and various other individuals if he hadn’t. Not wishing to antagonise students, overall Robinson says he was trying to prove the point that Conservative candidates can openly run and not feel like the distant minority. Deciding to wear his party affiliation on his sleeve, he hopes this will get the ball rolling and that future sabbatical elections will see more diversity among candidates making the campaign process far more interesting than previous years.
