STICKS AT THE READY FOR VARSITY 2011
BOTH the men’s and women’s hockey teams are looking forward to Varsity 2011 after contrasting with the results of this time last year.
At the same event last year, the men were narrowly beaten 3-2 by Cardiff, whereas the women triumphed 1-0 against their counterparts from down the M4.
The ladies first team have certainly had an enjoyable season as they faced the challenge of a new league after earning promotion last year.
"We were out of our depth but we were in there," stated captain Nuala Evans.
However despite teeth-gritting performances in some close matches and a few costly refereeing decisions, the ladies had to endure relegation from the Western Conference which Evans thought was injustice to the team’s efforts.
The season saw three confrontations with their South Wales rivals; 2-0 and 4-1 defeats in the league, however the cup match proved a much tighter affair. Cardiff scored an early goal but Swansea gave it their all, however a 1-0 defeat was the full time result.
It is not all doom and gloom as the ladies are currently top of their Saturday league and are all excited for Wednesday’s Varsity match.
Chloe Guy, the ladies hockey secretary believes they can pull off a win.
"The team spirit is positive. It’s a one off occasion and the team need to rise to it" she said.
For Cardiff, the Welsh Institute of Sport (WIS) is not home soil and Guy thinks that this spices up the showdown because Swansea play on a water-based surface which is used at the WIS.
"We have put in extra training but in the end it’s whoever wants it on the day" added Evans.
Last year saw Swansea claim a 1-0 victory and Evans is confident that the team repeat the feat on Wednesday.
"We have won it before so we know that we want to win it again."
This year, it will certainly be too close to call, with Cardiff finishing stronger in the league and perhaps having an edge in form but Swansea are confident they can claim a win as Evans paid tribute to the spirit of the team.
"Quite a lot of the team are stressed out with dissertation deadlines" she said.
"The season has been intense up to Varsity with no Easter holiday beforehand this year but everyone has made a massive commitment and I’m very proud."
A special mention goes to Nick Bowen who has put in loads of effort including getting up early in the morning to help the ladies train and how "he puts up with all us girls," joked Evans.
The men’s first team have had a good season where they achieved their target of a safe mid-table position in the Western Conference. Captain Chris Hackling admitted the highlight of the season was stoking the embers of Varsity back in February by beating the Cardiff 2nd’s 4-0 in their own backyard with the 1st team in the crowd.
"A few comments were made, and we are all looking forward to the match."
Hackling is a highly experienced player, who also coaches the ladies team as well as captaining the men’s, something which he is proud of.
"Teaching others the sport helps me improve as a player" he said.
Last year the team were on the end of a tight 3-2 defeat to their arch-rivals, but when asked about his team’s chances, Hackling was full of optimism.
"I am confident" he said.
"This is my fourth Varsity and every year it is getting closer."
Hackling also paid tribute to the team spirit within the group.
"We came to together as a group and being self-sufficient has brought us all closer together" he said.
Looking ahead to next year, Hackling believes that team will remain strong with five fresher’s currently in the team that will mature as players throughout university as well as hoping for an influx on new talent in September.
