Sitting in a Naval Club at the sea front of Port Talbot seems an unlikely place to find a Hollywood actor.

Famous for playing David Frost, Brian Clough, Tony Blair and Lucian from the Underworld film series, Michael Sheen has rose to great heights in Hollywood whilst remaining distinctly Welsh.

If, like me, you’re a believer in the ‘so bad it’s good’ film category, then there is one actor who is the very definition of this concept, Nicolas Cage. Whilst it is true then when he is good, in films like Leaving Las Vegas or more recently Kick-Ass he is astounding but it’s without question the bad and insanely over the top performances when his skills really shine through.

With the Critics Choice Movie Awards, BAFTAs and Oscars all following one another in quick succession, it can be easy to become oversaturated and dismiss awards season as a slightly redundant hype-machine. Awards evenings can be seen as simply lots of famous people telling one other how wonderful they are, but when this superficiality is looked past, there are many aspects of awards season that are genuinely rather important and necessary to a healthy artistic culture.
