‘DISGUSTING AND UNACCEPTABLE’ TOILETS

ANGRY students have spoken out about the state of the toilets inside Fulton House.
Users of the toilet have written insults including various sexual slurs, offensive language, inappropriate jokes, attempted advertising encouraging students to call for ‘sexual favours’ and even homophobic graffiti.
With news that this was not the first time the issue has been raised within the University, the Waterfront approached the President of the LGBT who told us, “It’s disgusting, everyone is of course entitled to their opinion, but the fact that they do it on the door of a toilet is just wrong and shouldn’t be accepted or tolerated in the university.”
LGBT Officer Dan Grinnell agreed, “Homophobia is unacceptable, homophobic graffiti is unacceptable; the university is a safe environment for all types of people, and it’s distressing to hear that it is present right under our noses, and even worse that it isn’t being dealt with immediately.”
Despite many toilets across campus undergoing refurbishment to modern day standards in recent years, work has yet to be started on Fulton House toilets, which are in a serious state of disrepair.
Along with discriminating graffiti, both the male and female toilets have maintenance issues. Several sinks are cracked, hand dryers have been broken and not replaced, and plaster has been ripped off the walls. Overused mops and dirty cleaning water are stored in plain sight in a cubicle of the girl’s toilets.
It is understood from speaking to sources inside Estates that the reason work has started outside Fulton House before inside is because of external planning permission granted and listed building consent, which is still to be granted for inside the building.
History student Simon Andrew told us, “I generally avoid the Fulton House toilets because of their poor condition; they don’t seem to be adequately maintained.”
When asked about the graffiti he said: “It’s shocking that people who should, in theory, be quite intellectual, find such closed minded graffiti acceptable or amusing.”
Ian MacPherson, Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities Management told The Waterfront, “This is vandalism. It is disappointing and we do not condone the singling out of any group. We have taken immediate action by removing what we can of the graffiti. We are waiting for listed building consent before we can improve anything else. The toilets are due to for refurbishment within the financial year.
Ian encourages students to report any offensive graffiti to Estates. The Waterfront stands in support alongside the university and Students Union against any damage done against University and Union property.
