THE COUNTDOWN to Varsity 2011 is now well underway as the biggest sporting event of the academic year heads to the home of Welsh rugby.
The showpiece occasion will be played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Wednesday, March 30th as Swansea look to defend their title in the events 15th anniversary.
WRU National Development Manager Jason Lewis said: “Our universities are arguably some of our biggest rugby clubs in Wales in terms of the number of teams they put out on a weekly basis.”
Former Swansea student Alun Wyn Jones, who graduated with a Law degree and played for Swansea in Varsity when it was held at the Brewery Field in Bridgend, is anticipating yet another scintillating clash between the two teams in March – with Swansea coming out on top.
“Varsity is always a massive fixture attracting superb support from university students and alumni and it is fantastic news that the home of Welsh international rugby will be hosting next year’s event.”
“Swansea’s successful record to date shows the passion and preparation that the university show at each Varsity fixture and I’m confident that they will be driving back up the M4 with the trophy next year.”
Last year’s event saw 11,000 students turn up to watch Swansea beat Cardiff 16-12 to regain the Varsity trophy at the Liberty Stadium and Cardiff-born Welsh international Jamie Roberts believes there is something extra special about a Varsity game.
“There’s nothing better than to play rugby with your mates, and that’s what’s so great about university rugby.”
With this year’s event being played at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, many students have expressed a concern about a potential lack of atmosphere that has been previously created in venues such as Cardiff Arms Park.
“It shows that the WRU is committed to student rugby and we want to put it back on the map that it used to be at and give it the status that it deserves” said Lewis.
“It’s the 15th anniversary of the game and it’s an honour for both the universities and the players to play here” said Swansea University coach Richard Lancaster.
“I have been to many Wales matches here in the last ten years but I have never experienced an atmosphere like a Varsity match and with the roof shut, the noise generated with be spectacular” said Cardiff Head of Rugby Martyn Fowler.
“I think we reached saturation point with regard to playing at the Arms Park and to go one better and play here is fantastic” added Fowler.
But Lancaster believes it is more than just a game.
“The match is always ferocious. They are playing in front of housemates and course mates and they don’t want to let anyone down.”
“There will be nerves but that was the same last year at the Liberty Stadium and we are really looking forward to it.”
Fowler was also quick to point out that he didn’t want the opportunity to pass by quickly for all the players involved.
“You are given this opportunity once in a lifetime and we want them to grasp it with both hands” he said.
Alun Wyn Jones spoke exclusively to The Waterfront and he wants the players to get the complete matchday experience that mirrors that of international rugby.
“I hope the game is given the works with the fireworks and the smoke and do it justice” he said.
“Playing here is like playing nowhere else in the world.”
When asked what he would say to the players if he was in the dressing room before kick-off, he gave a response of unrivalled experience.
