HITCHIN' A RIDE
IN JUST one week, over sixty Swansea students will be embarking on a charity hitch-hike to Morocco or Prague.
The Hitch is an annual event run by the charity Link Community Development, whose aims revolve around improving the educational system in sub-saharan Africa.
The Hitch alone raises an astonishing 30% of LCD’s annual contributions, with each hitcher raising the minimum sponsorship total of £375. Swansea alone is expecting to raise at least £22,000 for the cause.
Several successful fundraising events were held last week, most notably a fundraising Date Auction which was arranged by hitchers Ryan Patmore and Dylan Hills, who, with the support of many local businesses donating dates to the cause, raised over £530 for LCD.
Swansea has had a particularly strong presence nationally this year throughout the Hitch process, maintaining itself in the top three Universities for the majority of the year.
Despite this strong representation, over thirty Swansea students have dropped out of the event this year for various reasons, predominantly as a result of the civil unrest in countries such as Libya and Egypt prompting fears in both students and parents nationwide.
Third year English Literature with Classics student Holly Granger told The Waterfront : "Both mine and my two hitch partners parents were really uncomfortable with the idea of us visiting Morocco in the midst of the civil unrest in the region, so in the end all three of us dropped out.
"Hitch-hiking to Morocco is a pretty terrifying concept for parents already, I wouldn’t want to put them through the added worry of their daughter being caught up in a riot."
LCD have been keeping a close eye on the political situation in Africa, and have reassured participants that through working closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office who have confirmed that there are no reasons why the Morocco Hitch should not go ahead as normal.
