REDEVELOPEMT at the front of Fulton House has started and is likely to continue into the New Year according to University sources.

The refurbishment is the last link in the Mall restoration project that has been under development for the last two years.

Its understood the steps in front of the bus stop will remain in place, but the step directly in front of the automatic doors entrance will be removed.

Alun Griffiths, Estates Project Officer, hopes that the work will “provide an easier point of access for all students and that it will link in to the general improvement of Fulton House.”

In order to maintain a minimalist amount of disturbance to students the project has been split into two sides. Griffiths understands that “Fulton House is probably the second busiest place on campus next to the library and although it would have been easier and cheaper to do the whole thing at once it was just not feasible.”

Students are reassured that the development work will not affect the exams in January with Estates working closely with the Examination Officers around this period.

However, 1st year Computer Science student, James Sherdel, told the Waterfront that “at the moment the work is really annoying especially because they have shut off the manual doors. As a result you can only use the automatic doors, which there is normally a big queue at.”

More redevelopment in Fulton House is also planned for the New Year, with JC’s toilets a priority .

Griffiths confirmed, “It is at the top of our list and we understand that this must be done even if nothing else is renovated this year. The reason we have delayed the work is because we want to do a good job of it and therefore we are employing a team of designers to conduct a feasibility study of the whole building.”

Fulton House is not the only area currently being redeveloped. The walkway outside James Callaghan building is still being reconstructed and is likely to carry on into the New Year due to unforeseen circumstances.
