Tarantelle – Scherzo. Op.16 - Composed by Henryk Wieniawski
A close friend of the great Rubinstein, this polish violinist and composer featured in London’s great Beethoven Quartet Society.
Room 108 – Giovanni Allevi.
Boasting great credentials from some of Italy’s top music academies, Allevi is quickly maturing and being accepted in circles around the world. With some great key and tempo changes, this is one of my favourite tracks from his first album 13 dita. If you like it I recommend his live album AlleviLive.
No leaf clover – Metallica
The balance in this track between the San Francisco Symphony and the band is quality. It would have been interesting to how this track would have worked without an orchestral backing.
Lacrimosa, Requiem in D minor – Mozart
One of the greatest by one of the greats, but not without is controversy. As the Requiem was left unfinished when Mozart died, there are many myths around what extent of the work was completed after.
Hajnal – Venetian Snares
This is exciting stuff now. This is classical meets dirty synthesisers with a gabba-like beats. Truly inspirational stuff for me with combination of all things I like about music. The classical excerpts come from a Paganini caprice and the obscure work of Hungarian composer Bartók. Perhaps he is the inspirational behind the naming of the album and all its tracks in Hungarian. So with that, Rossz csillag alatt született is my album recommendation. To say Venetian Snares’, alias for Aaron Funk, work has an element of pessimism in it would be a massive understatement. With the album translating as “cursed from birth”, its grimy tones and general atonality, listening may be a handful for some. For the adventurous listeners, this album is a must. Set in your monotonous pop culture ways? Give it a miss.
Don’t turn around – Aswad
Just in case you were losing interest in my selection, this is a very early reminder for what is to come later this term in Swansea. Casting back to 2005 as a fresher, Swansea’s warm months drawing us ever more frequently to the beach. Flip flops, sunglasses, cold drinks and this tune… great times had here at Swansea.
Sunnyside of the street – The Pogues
Year: 2007. Location: Italy, on a balcony in the bronzing Bolognese sun with a frozen mason jar filled with Ichnusa in one hand, and a healthy dose of Uisce beatha in the other hand with friends that will never be forgotten.
Wild mountain thyme – McPeake; Dick Gaughan’s version
This is tranquil and relaxing listening. Emmylou Harris plays a vital role in making this my favourite version. Her singing whilst seeming effortless has a distinct haunting element.
