Since discovering the free cookery lessons at Uplands Diner I have attended two fantastic sessions. These lessons really are perfect for anyone looking for something different to do in the evenings whilst at the same time, learning crucial culinary skills. The lessons at the diner have been so successful that renowned chef Chris Keenan has already agreed to do a total of eight lessons, as opposed to the original two.

John Haynes is a critically acclaimed and well-established poet. He was born in Newquay, Cornwall in 1936 and has been writing for many years – his first book, Sabon Gari, was published in 1974. He spent time teaching as an associate professor of English at  the Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria in the 1970s and ‘80s, where he founded a literary journal called Saiwa, and it is clear that this experience has had a great influence on his work.

ANOTHER February, another Six Nations, but far from being a calendar disrupting formality, this year’s competition has the added spice of being in World Cup year.

With just five games to play, each country involved will be refining their game to show off what they’re made of, not just to each other, but to the world. The likes of South Africa, Australia, and World Cup hosts New Zealand will be paying special attention to what goes on above the equator, make no mistake.

FOR THE eighty something Snowriders involved, the Christmas trip to Tignes kicked off on the 31st of December down Wind Street to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

The next day on the coach leaving Swansea we were all pretty hungover but like mummy’s little soldiers we powered through and begun the frolicking, pyjama party style.  One Ella Desmond-Williams getting particularly animated after a bottle of Kick with the obligatory measures of complimentary spirits.  It wasn’t long before the marker pen got broken out for some pretty inappropriate facial doodling on the ferry.  The marker pen being a crucial and recurring feature in the life of a Snowrider.  And so we made our way to Tignes!

ANOTHER excellent night with the comedy club was presented by Phil Cooper, a semi-pro with some cracking ideas to occupy paedophiles with midget dating websites and a brilliant explanation, almost Ed Bryne style, of why Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ isn’t the innocent song we all think it to be.

WHEN learning of the plot of Alexander Mackendrick’s 1963 film Sammy Going South you may well be put off by its outright depressing and tragic beginning. It tells the story of a young boy who loses his parents to a British bomb in Egypt, as they become victims of the 1956 Suez crisis.
